The tourism sector in Austria registered a total of 12.24 million overnight stays during the month of September, representing a 5% rise over the same month last year and the highest September figure ever recorded.

This is according to a new report published by Statistics Austria on Wednesday.

“As the penultimate month of the summer tourist season, September was indeed very summery this year. In the warmest September in recorded history, tourism also achieved a new September record with 12.24 million overnight stays in Austrian hotels, pensions and holiday apartments. In September 2023, 70% of overnight stays were accounted for by guests from abroad,” stated Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

The tourism industry within the central European country reported strong growth throughout the summer season. A total of 72.3 million overnight stays were registered between May and September this year, representing a 3.9% increase over the same timeframe last year, as per the Statistics Austria findings.

Indeed, the number of arrivals over summer, at 22.70 million, was 7.6% higher than the same time last year, and a rise of 1.2% over the past record between May to September 2019 of 22.43 million.

In addition, as of September, Austria had recorded a total of 125.95 million overnight stays this year, an 11.6% year-on-year increase and just 0.6% below the pre-pandemic level from 2019, the report goes on to say.

Furthermore, within an analysis by country of origin, overnight stays in Austria by guests from Germany rose by 1.8% to 5.15 million in September.

Other countries of origin with high overnight stays, including Switzerland and Liechtenstein (+6.1%; 407.9 million) as well as the Netherlands (+5.0%; 434.8 million), also posted elevated growth rates, the report adds.
