Tourism in Austria reached record levels in 2025, with approximately 157.27 million overnight stays and 48.17 million tourist arrivals, according to new figures from Statistics Austria.
This represents a 1.9% rise in nights spent and a 3.1% increase in arrivals compared to 2024, previously the strongest year on record. It is only the third time in history that overnight stays have exceeded 150 million.
More than half of these nights were logged in Tyrol and Salzburg, which together accounted for 80.92 million stays, with Tyrol up 1.7% and Salzburg rising 2.4% from the previous year.
In percentage terms, Vienna recorded the strongest year-on-year growth at 6.5%, rising to 7.7% among non-resident visitors.
In addition, international tourists made up around three-quarters (74.3%) of total overnight stays, with the largest contributions coming from Germany (58.55 million), Netherlands (11.26 million), and combined Switzerland and Liechtenstein visitors.
City tourism remained strong, with Vienna and other provincial capitals recording 29.05 million overnight stays, a 5.7% increase from the previous year. Vienna surpassed the 20-million mark for the first time, totalling 20.09 million nights spent.
“The year 2025 brought domestic tourism an all-time high in terms of overnight stays,” stated Manuela Lenk, director general – statistics, at Statistics Austria.
“With 157.27 million nights spent in hotels, guesthouses and holiday apartments, the 150 million mark was exceeded for the third time in a row. Compared to the strong year of 2024, this represents an increase of 1.9%. The growth is mainly attributable to international guests, but overnight stays by domestic guests also rose slightly compared to the previous year.”
Elsewhere, tourism intensity, calculated as overnight stays per resident, edged up to 17.1 nights per person in 2025, compared with 16.8 in 2024 and just shy of the 2019 peak of 17.2 nights per inhabitant.
