Austria has called on the European Union to respond to the newly announced US tariffs with determination and confidence, highlighting the importance of a united and assertive European trade strategy.
Indeed, Austria’s Federal Minister of Economy, Energy, and Tourism, Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, underscored the need for the EU to swiftly implement countermeasures and to prepare for further actions in light of recent remarks by US President Donald Trump.
Trump has proposed imposing a 30% tariff on imports from the European Union beginning in early August, a move that has raised significant concerns within European trade circles.
Hattmannsdorfer’s appeal underlines the urgency for the EU to present a cohesive front, protecting its economic interests while sending a clear message that protectionist measures will be met with proportionate and strategic responses.
The Austrian minister urged the European Union to “act with firmness and confidence,” during a meeting of EU trade ministers on Monday in Brussels.
“The EU must demonstrate strength and self-assurance,” and he also urged that the announced countermeasures be advanced without delay, stating, “things cannot continue this way in light of the daily statements coming from the US.”
He expressed his support for the European Commission’s efforts to build global alliances with countries also at risk of US trade sanctions, aiming to “increase global pressure” in response.
Furthermore, he stressed the importance of broadening trade partnerships and advancing free trade deals as key strategies for Austria.
“If we implement the free trade agreements currently under discussion, we can compensate for 75% of the US measures,” he went on to add, highlighting that the moment has arrived for more transparent and direct dialogue with the United States.
